  16. <p>     Macaulay Culkin's latest is desperately sentimental

  20. <p>     Now that Macaulay Culkin is a teenager, vulnerability, the quality
  21. that has prevented his wise child from turning into a wise guy,
  22. comes harder for him. Now that Ted Danson is a movie star, or
  23. thinks he is, stupidity comes harder for him. Danson's character
  24. in Getting Even with Dad is supposed to be an inept thief, but
  25. the actor doesn't want to dig into dumbness, which is where
  26. the laughs, if any, might be. Untutored is the worst he'll allow
  27. himself to seem. Untutored, but capable of sensitivity, of love,
  28. of being a '90s beau ideal, if given a chance.

  30. <p>     Providing that chance is the job of the half-pint, in a movie
  31. so desperately maneuvered that it's possibly unfair to blame
  32. Danson for defending himself against it. Culkin plays Timmy,
  33. the son whom widowed Ray hasn't seen for three years, and he
  34. arrives just as his dad and two confederates are about to rob
  35. a coin collection. This they manage with a cleverness that belies
  36. their alleged incompetence. But the boy steals the loot, and
  37. will give it back only if Ray will act the good father for a
  38. week--you know, ball games, amusement parks, miniature golf.
  39. Father and son bond, of course, and along the way Timmy does
  40. a little matchmaking, helping Pop and the cop who's trailing
  41. him (Glenne Headly) fall in love.
  42. </p>
  43. <p>     Timmy is a calculating little guy, the creation of calculating
  44. big guys. Like everyone else in the movie, he appears to have
  45. been morphed into existence by people who aren't writing or
  46. directing in the usual sense of those words but are operating
  47. a computer whose keypad is marked with a few simple signs: sentiment,
  48. sweetness, lovable mischievousness. The coldness with which
  49. these filmmakers pursue warmth is--no other word for it--bone chilling.
